Affirmative Action isn't the problem, inequality is.

By now you’ve probably heard of the absolutely outlandish scandal that broke regarding multiple high profile celebrities/ professionals bribing their children’s way into college. As a black (almost) college graduate, I was glad to see how this event opened the door to a more pointed discussion about affirmative action.

You could turn a side hustle into a budding business, pack up a van, and work your digital business from any Starbucks across the nation at this point - and people are doing exactly that everyday. But why is the side hustle culture so appealing now?

The day finally came. On Friday, February 21st, a warrant for R. Kelly's arrest was sent. Soon after, he turned himself in. He was officially charged with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault. Prosecutors alleged that the abuse involved four victims, at least three of them minors, from 1998 to 2010. He pleaded not guilty, (rolls eyes).

While some people reacted with outrage and sympathy towards Jussie, other people questioned the actors' story from the beginning. As a result, they faced backlash for not immediately accepting the actors' story. This story brings to light an important question, are we allowed to publicly doubt?

It should go without saying that blackface is not permissible in any shape, form, or fashion. Each piece of clothing that is released by a brand goes through a process and is seen by many eyes. Yet, the fact that various fashion brands continue to use blackface in their clothing and on the runway has me wondering why?

Women Of Color Did Not Come To Play: Political Gains Made in 2018

By: Cassandre

Although politics can be a sensitive subject for us to talk about and with good reason, there were some important and positive political gains that were made in 2018 by Black women and women of color that remind me that there is hope, all is not for naught and that we must continue the good fight. In fact, now more than ever I believe do we need these positive reminders, especially being a Black person living in America in 2019.

The term blackfishing is relatively new, but many believe the concept isn’t. The uptick in white women using makeup and tanning to darken their skin is believed to be a modern-day form of blackface. Whether the goal is to appear to have darker skin or black ancestry, imitating the black appearance has become quite the phenomenon.

Look, we get it. After a long day of navigating the modern world in all of its complications and eccentricities, all you really want to do is unwind. A good laugh, perhaps, to help remind you that you’re not crazy (but the world certainly is). Or maybe a gentle tug of the heartstrings to reconfirm that there is good in the world and good people behind it all.

Not long ago, the cancellation of a show by a major television network would officially be the end of its run. No reboots. No redos. Maybe, if it was lucky, a show may retain cult status and live on as chat-room canon fodder, but with the rise of streaming powerhouses such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime, the network cancellation of a show may just give the program the boost it needed to succeed on an alternative platform.

Browsing the array of TV shows and movies available at the click of a mouse (or a TV remote button), it seems impossible to remember life before streaming services like Amazon Prime and Netflix. Initially created as an online DVD rental service, Netflix expanded in 2007 and introduced a video streaming service. From “binge-watching” to “Netflix and chill”, it’s undeniable that streaming services are changing not only the way we talk about TV but the way we watch it, too.

When Amazon Studios announced in November of 2017 that they had acquired the rights to J.R.R. Tolkien’s wildly popular fantasy series The Lord of the Rings and would be producing a TV prequel series for their Prime streaming service, I did what any self-respecting “Ringer” would have done. I sat myself down and watched, in its entirety, Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Yes, the extended editions. Yes, it was glorious.

We’re Halfway Through Season 3 of Riverdale

Three seasons in and Riverdale is still going strong. Despite its branding as guilty-pleasure TV, critics have been kind the show, a teenage-noir reboot of the Archie comic books. It’s been called “daring” and “addictive” but also “odd.” That’s fair enough. Faithful fans of the comics might be perplexed or even alarmed given how many scenes open with Archie working out shirtless and, you know, all the murder. From the get-go, it’s clear that Riverdale isn’t the Archie Americans will remember reading in the grocery store check-out line.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, along with Netflix, has rebooted the 90s TV series Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Fans of the original were, understandably, skeptical. After all, it takes skill and a fresh new vision to create a compelling new version of a classic. Luckily, Aguirre-Sacasa does exactly that with Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Heroes must be held onto for they are few and far between. Since 2015, with the release of Daredevil, Netflix has been the champion streamer of all things superhero. Most recently however a shadow has been casted upon them, as Disney’s own streaming service lurks on the horizon and threatens to steal away the Marvel features which have found their home on Netflix.

Drug Dealer Music or Drug User Music: Is There a Lesser Evil?

Rap and Hip Hop artists today often are ridiculed by older generations for the blatant promotion of drug use in their music and the heavy influence it has on this generation. The idea that original gansta rappers made drug dealer music, but newer rappers are making drug user music has been a recurring topic of debate. Does today’s rap and Hip Hop have the wrong message, especially given the addiction crisis and war on drugs?

As described eloquently by Fayetteville-bred rapper J. Connecting digitally to audiences on the ground floor of social media platforms is what directly correlates to success.

Separating the Art from The Artist, Is It Possible?

Is it possible to separate the art from the artist? Recent events in pop culture have brought up this discussion again. In early January, LifeTime premiered Surviving R. Kelly, a docu-series that explores the sexual abuse allegations that have come out against R. Kelly over the last 20 plus years. Despite these various allegations, R. Kelly's music career continued to thrive, even now. In the week since the documentary premiered, R. Kelly's Music sales have increased.

Apparently, a reckoning is coming, and her name is Belcalis. By now, those who follow pop culture should be used to the fact that the Grammys will almost always disappoint by wildly subverting expectations. Some might go so far as to say that the award has lost its prestige due to the show’s recent celebration of less than worthy offerings.
